Civilians also filled key roles in the Medical Fields as the Homefront became hospitals.  Some rare Civilians went so far as to try to organize and even institutionalize some of those roles.  Clara Barton and Dorthea Dix  looked towards the example of Florence Nightingale set during the Crimean War for the establishment of their Nursing Corps and Hospital standards.
